During the last two days in Jalpaiguri and Malda districts of West Bengal, two kids died due to malaria, whereas 12 others, including nine jawans of the Railway Protection (Special) Force, are undergoing treatment with the vector-borne disease.

Dr. Himadri Air, Alipurduar Hospital Superintendent stated, "A child, Sunita Soren (2) of Kalchini and Anisha Dorji (12) of Chalsa in Jalpaiguri district died of malaria."

Dr. Himadri also said that the condition of four including Rajur Rava, Kavita Dorji, Reshmi Rava and Pushpa Rai suffering from malaria were serious.

He added that patients were dying as they reach hospital at a critical stage rendering the doctors helpless to save their lives regardless of having sufficient medicine and other facilities to handle malaria.

The jawans were taken to Malda Railway Hospital on Sunday after they were diagnosed with falciparum malaria.

They developed the symptoms of malaria when sent for poll duty at Diphu in Karbi Anglong area of Assam and were going for duty at Jangipur in Murshidabad, which would go to the polls on May 7.

Dr. D Sarkar, Chief Medical Officer of the railway hospital, said the samples of their blood were sent to New Delhi for further examination.
