UK homes might face power cut this winter
According to a new report, millions of homes in the UK might face power cuts this winter season as the national grid faces shortage.
The National Grid's Winter Outlook report showed that it stands at just five per cent, which is at the lowest since 2007. Experts have said that the country might face a serious situation as a reserve of 20 per cent was generally regarded as necessary for safety and anything lower than that might put the country at the risk of blackouts.
Ian Fells, emeritus professor of energy conversion at Newcastle University said, "This is a dangerously low margin and reveals a real risk of things running out. Even with a margin of 20 per cent, reserves are stretched during a very cold spell and could run out. If there is a problem with power stations this margin just isn't enough."
He said that the national grid depends on power stations that should have been replaced or closed down much earlier. The report said that the reserve levels fell from historically high levels over the previous few years. The report blamed EU emissions -legislation for the fall due to various import capacity.
