UK’s major food brands agree to cut calories in productsSome of the major food producers in the UK have agreet to cut calories in their products as part of an initiative to fight obesity in the country.

A total of seventeen companies have joined the Responsibility Deal, which a part of the government's initiate to combat obesity in Britain. Coca-Cola Great Britain has said that it will reduce calories by 30% in some of its soft drinks by the year 2014.

Mars assured that he calories in its mars chocolate bars would be reduced from 260 to 250 calories by 2013. Tesco has said that it is planning to remove 1.8 billion calories from its soft drinks. It also said that along with other supermarkets in the country it will promote its brands of low-calorie products.

According to the latest data, about a forth of the people in the UK are overweight, while only bout 6 per cent believe that they are obese. Supermarket stores of Asda, the Co-op and Aldi are now offering discounts on healthy food to promote healthy eating habits. The stores are offering discounts on healthy ingredients such as fruit and vegetables and low fat yoghurts.

About four million recipe cards will be distributed while a recipe finder will be launched online to allow families find cheap and healthy meals.
