New York - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon welcomed on Monday the signing of agreements providing the framework to settle the political dispute among parties in Madagascar.
Ban called for the quick implementation of the agreements signed in Maputo, Mozambique on Sunday, which commit the four signers to a peaceful resolution of the conflict under a government of national unity in Magadascar.
The four Magadascan politicians who signed the agreements are Andry Rajoelina, Marc Ravalomanana, Didier Ratsiraka and Albert Zafy.
Ban said in a statement that the four should quickly agree to the "composition and the establishment of the institutions of the transition leading to credible elections and the restoration of democracy and the rule of law in Madagascar."
The agreements were reached under the mediation of former Mozambican President Joachim Chissano and the Joint Mediation Team for Madagascar composed of the African Union, the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the International Organisation of the Francophonie (OIF) and the United Nations.
Ban congratulated the mediators and appealed for "all political actors in Madagascar to build on the Maputo consensus and to work for the prompt implementation of the agreements."
"The United Nations is ready to support the implementation of the agreements, in cooperation with the AU, SADC and the OIF and with the assistance of the International Contact Group and the wider international community," Ban said.(dpa)
