Uninor gets new chief executive ahead of spectrum auctionTelecom operator Telenor on Wednesday appointed its strategy & regulatory affairs head Morten Karlsen Sorby as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of its Indian unit Uninor.

The appointment of Sorby, who previously headed the company's Norwegian and Nordic mobile & fixed network operations, took effect immediately.  Sorby holds a Master of Science in Business Administration and also holds a degree from Switzerland's International Institute for Management Development.

Jon Fredrik Baksaas, President and CEO of Telenor Group, said, "Morten's vast experience from the global mobile industry and solid leadership skills will inject new energy and further insights into the already empowered Uninor team."

Norway-based Telenor owns 74 per cent stake in Telewings Communications Ltd, which operates Uninor.

Sorby has been appointed as Uninor CEO at a time when the company is preparing its strategy for spectrum auction in the country, which is slated to take place in early February.  The new CEO said the company's strategy was clear and its model was proven, adding that his job would be to deliver on the strategy alongside the management and employees of the company.

Uninor, which operates in six telecom circles in India, viz.  UP East, UP West, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat, has more than 30 million customers.
