Vijender Singh moves to top spot in AIBA rankings

Vijender Singh India’s star pugilist Vijender Singh has created yet another history as he jumped to no. 1 place in the middle weight category (75 kg) in the latest International Boxing Association's (AIBA) rankings announced on Tuesday.

The Beijing Olympic bronze medalist Vijender Singh had won bronze medal in the recently concluded World Championships in Milan. This was first ever medal won by any Indian boxer in this event.

The 23-year old Haryana boxer Vijender gained 200 points after the Milan event to move to a total of 2700 points and leave behind the top placed World Champion Abbos Atoev of Uzbekistan. Olympic silver medalist Emilio Correa Bayeux (2500) of Cuba is ranked second while Atoev slipped to third position with 2100 points.

Speaking to media, Vijender said that he is excited to be top ranked in the world and this achievement will motivate him to give his best in the future events also.

Thokchom Nanao Singh, former world youth champion, has dropped three spots to be at the eighth rank with 1400 points in the light fly weight (48kg) category while Olympian Akhil Kumar slipped one spot to be at 10th place in feather weight (57kg) category with 1050 points.
