Walmart to use another brand name in India
Global retail giant, Wal-Mart Stores is not likely to use its global brand name for its retail operations in India, according to a senior official from its local joint venture partner Bharti Enterprises.
Wal-Mart and other global retailers are planning to launch front-end entry into the India market after the Indian government announced its decision to allow foreign direct investment (FDI) in the supermarket sector in the country.
Rajan Bharti Mittal, vice-chairman & MD Bharti Enterprises said that Wal-Mart will adopt an Indian model for its supermarkets in India. The global giant operates Walmart-branded stores in the US and a few other countries but 90% of its international stores operate under a different brand name.
The $421-billion company runs its stores under Walmex brand in Mexico, as Asda in the UK and as Seiyu in Japan. It is present in 28 countries outside the US.
"Our partnership with Walmart will take a natural progression and we will start having a dialogue on how to take it forward keeping in mind the fresh development on FDI," Mittal added.
India’s Bharti Retail had tied up with Walmart in 2007 to set up a joint venture under the brand name, Bharti Walmart. The joint venture runs supply chain and sourcing for Bharti's Easy Day stores while it also runs 14 wholesale cash-and-carry stores called Best Price in India.
