‘We’ll double per capita income’

Ashok-ChavanThe Congress-Nationalist Congress Party alliance has promised that the per capita income in the state would go up to Rs 1 lakh from the present Rs 55, 000 in the next five years.

The allies, along with the Republican Party of India (RPI), made the assurance in their joint election manifesto released at Nariman Point on Friday.

Chief Minister Ashok Chavan and NCP leader and deputy chief minister Chhagan Bhujbal released the manifesto in the presence of other senior leaders.

The manifestos of the Congress-led combine and that of the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance have several similarities. “The saffron alliance can assure anything because it knows it won’t come to power,” said Chavan. “We are confident we will win.”

The 21-point manifesto did not touch issues like regularisation of slums and Maratha reservations. The Marathi manoos, however, found a mention. “The government will start a ‘Marathi language conservation fortnight’ between May 1 and May 15 and a review panel will check on it,” said Chavan.
