Why Nintendo’s new Wii U console may not see long-term success

Why Nintendo’s new Wii U console may not see long-term success With Nintendo apparently all set to launch its new Wii U console in the US this Sunday, some early reviews of the system by a few analysts have implicitly revealed that the console will probably not witness long-term success.

About the reasons why Nintendo appears to have set the Wii U console for failure, analysts are of the opinion that the console has quite a few shortcomings, especially when compared to the overall gaming experience on rival platforms, like Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation system.

The first and foremost reason why success will probably elude Nintendo's Wii U in the long run is that the console's $300 initial price-point is rather too high. Despite the fact that the mentioned price-tag is a fetching one by new-console standards, it has been pointed out that consumers hardly think of `Wii' as a `high-end' electronic device.

Moreover, the hardcore content which will initially make its way to the Wii U will largely comprise old titles which have already been experienced by the players on other platforms. In addition, there is hardly any so-called `killer application' which will initially come aboard the new Nintendo console to prompt the gamers to go for the device.

Finally, as per an unidentified hardware-games developer, Wii U underscores a "weird design decision" by Nintendo, particularly because the company has attempted to do "something different" with the console's controllers --- and that too at a time when "the rest of the industry is trying to standardize controllers"!
