In an interesting news, a Canadian resident Nathalie Blanchard lost her insurance benefits despite being on a long term leave for depression because her agent stumbled upon some of her Facebook pictures where she "appeared to be having fun".
After being diagnosed with major depression last year, Nathalie, who was working for IBM in Bromont, Quebec, had been receiving monthly sick-leave benefits from Manulife, the Canadian insurance giant.
After payments stopped coming-in starting Fall, Nathalie contacted Manulife, only to be told that it was clear that now she should be available for work, owing to some Facebook pictures. Her insurance agent described various pictures that she had posted on the popular social networking website, including ones taken during her birthday, at the Chippendales bar show and on a holiday, in which she appeared to be happy and out of depression. The sequence of events has been confirmed by Nathalie, who is now fighting to get her benefits reinstated.
Nathalie has shared that she had been trying to go out and have fun on her doctor's counsel. While Manulife has not commented specifically on the case yet, the company did say that it would never "deny or terminate a claim solely based on information published on Web sites such as Facebook".
