World celebrates Earth Day

World celebrates Earth DayToday at the 40th anniversary of World Earth Day is expected to participation from more than one billion people making it the biggest secular civic event in the world.

The official forum to celebrate the event, Earth Day Network (EDN) wants to make Earth Day 2010 a defining moment in the environmental movement. The network brings together 20,000 partners and organizations in 190 countries to celebrate the event on April 22 every year.

In India, apart from The Energy and Resource Institute, other institutions like The Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business management, NDTV Hindu Greenathon 2010 and Arts for the Earth have partnered with the forum to participate in the event.

Among other Indian companies marking the event is Cisco which is participating in global discussions about environmental sustainability with industry thought leaders and technology experts starting April 20.

The Company's office in Bangalroe will host secession on rainwater harvesting, organic farming and wildlife conservation to mark the day. The company also started a global initiative called Think Green, Act Green Pledge for its employees and it will donate $1 for every pledge made to water. org, which is a non-profit organization working towards providing safe drinking water and sanitation to people.

In the IT sector, Wipro is marking the day. A senior official wrote in a blog post that the day is becoming ever more important for each individual to not take natural resources for granted.

The Earth Day was first celebrated in the year 1970 with the participation of about one million people in the US who took to the streets, parts and other places demanding sustainable environment.
