Yahoo acquires Alike, the creator of mobile app for recommendations

Yahoo acquires Alike, the creator of mobile app for recommendationsOn Tuesday, Internet firm Yahoo gave a notable boost to its mobile division, by announcing that it has acquired Alike, the company which is the creator or a mobile app for recommendations.

With Alike's mobile app essentially helping users to locate nearby restaurants, bars and other venues which they may like, the Alike concept is fairly akin to that of location-sharing platform Foursquare, which now functions as a social network as well as a recommendation search engine.

Despite the fact that the financial terms of Yahoo's acquisition of Alike still remain officially undisclosed, the takeover move clearly indicates that the turnaround-attempting Internet firm is laying stress on its mobile strategies.

With Alike being acquired by Yahoo, a recent Alike blog post revealed that the company's team will join Yahoo's mobile organization in San Francisco and Sunnyvale, California. It further disclosed that the company will no longer support the `Alike Nearby' iPhone and Web applications.

Meanwhile, noting that the mobile app created by the Alike team "focuses on personalization -- using the restaurants and places you like to find the ones you'll love," a Yahoo representative said in an email statement to CNET: "We were very impressed by the (Alike) team and their approach to building personalized experiences."
