Yahoo to shut some media services by end of June

Yahoo is planning to shut a few of its services including Yahoo Maps and Yahoo Pipes as the service faces intense competition from Google Inc.'s Maps service.

In a blog post, Amotz Maimon, Yahoo's chief architect said that maps. yahoo. com will shut down by the end of this month.

Maimon mentioned that Yahoo's search and other services including photo-sharing website Flickr will still support Yahoo Maps.

These steps follow efforts by Chief Executive Marissa Mayer to revitalize meaningful revenue growth with a string of acquisitions and product revamps.

There has been a lot of pressure under Mayer to strengthen company's media and advertising business at a faster rate. He said that the company is scaling back mail support on the built-in Mail app for older versions of Apple Inc's iPhone operating system.

Yahoo said the Philippines homepage Yahoo Music services in France and Canada would be shuttered. The company will also close and Yahoo Movies in Spain.
