Antony takes tough stand on infiltration from across the border

Defence Minister A K AntonyHussainiwala (Punjab), May 13 : Two days after the encounter in the Samba sector of Jammu District, in which three Pakistani militants were killed, Defence Minister A K Antony today took a tough stand on the issue, and indirectly suggested that it was being encouraged from across India’s border.

The Government is taking steps to monitor the Line of Control and the International border after three-infiltration bids by militants during the last four days.

The Defence Minister, along with Army chief General Deepak Kapoor surveyed the international border posts along the Punjab border at Ferozepur. The local commanders briefed Antony about the defence preparedness and the current situation.

“Till April, by and large infiltration was under control and very less this year. But now again serious attempts are being made, especially through the LoC from across the border,” Antony said.

The Defence Minister said that the coming summer is important for Jammu and Kashmir because militants were trying to sneak across the international border dividing Pakistan and India with an eye to disrupt the elections in Jammu and Kashmir.

“More and more groups and parties are accepting democracy to be the best way to achieve their goals and will be participating in the coming election in the state,” he said.

Antony added, “This what our enemies are not interested and there would be more attempts of infiltration to disrupt peace process.”

The Defence Minister ruled out sending more troops to J-K, and said the Army is capable of frustrating any move from our neighbourhood to create problems inside the country.

Commenting on China’s move to modernise its nuclear arsenal, Antony said: “To counter modernisation of other armies we are spending more money on modernisation of our armed forces.”

General Kapoor, accompanying the Defence Minister, said as the snow melts, there is possibility of a rise in infiltration, and added that the Army is prepared and will take every step to check infiltration.

Antony also visited the national Memorial located at Hussainiwala and paid his respects to national heroes Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru. (ANI)
