Apple surpasses BlackBerry in Canadian marketAmerican technology giant, Apple has been able to surpass rival Canada-based, Research In Motion Ltd. (RIM) in its home market for the first time in the smartphone market.

Apple has overtaken RIM, which is the maker of the popular BlackBerry family of smartphones, with its iPhone smartphones in terms of total shipments. RIM shipped 2.08 million BlackBerrys in the previous year in Canada compared to 2.85 million units for Apple, according to data from IDC and Bloomberg.

RIM was ahead by about half a million devices in 2010 and it sold five units for every single Apple phone in 2008, which the iPhone. BlackBerry has enjoyed strong brand loyalty in its home market but the every popular iPhone smartphones are attracting more users as in other parts of the world.

BlackBerry has not really fallen from the top spot in so much as other smartphones have grown faster. iPhone smartphone, which is facing stiff competition from various Android as well as other devices globally, is emerging as the most preferred smartphone among mobile workers.

Thorsten Heins, RIM's new chief executive officer is palnning to do something really different to turn around the company. The company has released BlackBerry 7 phones with better Web browsers and touch-screen navigation and the BlackBerry 10 devices that will be launched next year will come with further improvements.
