Cops To Hunt For Unsecured Wi-Fi Connections In Mumbai

Cops To Hunt For Unsecured Wi-Fi Connections In MumbaiWith the intention to hunt for unsecured Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) connections in the city, Mumbai police have started the drive to act quickly to tackle this major issue.

The drive is on the back drop of cases wherein it came out that activists used such networks to send terror mails before blasts and terror attacks.

Soon, Mumbai policemen will be seen roaming at different locations with laptop computers and internet-enabled mobile phones in their hands in quest of unsecured Wi-Fi connections.

DCP Sanjay Mohite said, “If a particular place's Wi-Fi is not password protected or secured then the policemen at the spot has the authority to issue notice to the owner of the Wi-Fi connection directing him to secure the connection.”

If any person is found responsible of not securing their Wi-Fi, the police could issue a notice under section 149 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), and the Internet user may face investigation of criminal activities.

Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) is to prevent the commission of a cognizable offence.

The major step was taken during a meeting on Friday where around 80 police personnel were present to become conversant with Wi-Fi connections as well as cyber crime.

Before Delhi and Ahmedabad serial blasts, terror mails were sent via unsecured Wi-Fi connections. While the mail sent before the Ahmedabad blasts was traced to the residence of US national and Sanpada-resident Kenneth Haywood in Navi Mumbai, the mail sent before the Delhi blast was traced to the unsecured WiFi network of Chembur-based Kamran Powers Control Pvt Ltd.
