Dolphins Trapped in Frozen Water
Five Dolphins seem to be stuck in a tight situation in a harbour in Newfoundland, near Seal Cove. They are stuck in pack ice over there which has led the mayor, Winston May, to send out an SOS for ice breakers to save the wonderful creatures.
"They keep going round circles and trying to keep this little pool of water open so that they can have their breathing area," he said. But he added that they will not be able to survive for much longer if not rescued.
According to the residents in the community on the western side of the Baie Verte Peninsula, about 400 kilometres northwest of St. John's, the dolphins chased fish into the harbour but then got locked in when a storm pushed ice from the open ocean into the area.
Jack Lawson of the federal Fisheries Department says that rescue experts have been dispatched to assess the situation. He said that the dolphins will survive for as long as a few weeks if they have access to air.
"And they also have a fat layer on them, so they're not in any danger of starving. It's just whether or not their air supply will be cut off if the ice freezes over," he said.
Many local residents have been moved to tears by the plight and cries of the helpless dolphins.
"You could hear the screams coming out of them. And they were trying to break the ice there just to survive. And there's us here empty-handed. And DFO with all this money won't even send a boat in here to let those out? It's a crime," said Seal Cove resident Stanley Banks.
