Tallinn  -  Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves and Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek in Estonian capital Tallinn urged the European Union to develop a common energy policy Tuesday.

The Baltic nation of Estonia and Czech Republic agree the EU needs a common energy position, according to the president's office.

The Czech Republic takes over the rotating EU presidency in January.

"Your presidency falls on an important time of changes: implementation of the Lisbon Treaty, elections to the European Parliament, development of the European Union's common foreign service," Ilves told Topolanek, according to the Baltic News Service.

"I am sure the Czech Republic will successfully guide those processes and I hope we will manage to have effective cooperation in several spheres," he added.

On his official visit to Tallinn, Topolanek will meet with Estonia's Prime Minister Andrus Ansip, speaker of the parliament Ene Ergma, and open a business seminar at the Chamber of Trade and Industry.

Czech Republic and Estonia joined the EU in 2004. (dpa)
