France’s plug-in car sales jump 51% to 51,215 units in June 2023

France’s plug-in electric car sales significantly outperformed the general market and set a new record in June this year, thanks to consumers’ accelerating shift from internal combustion engines (ICEs) to EVs. As per newly-published data, a total of 51,215 new passenger plug-in electric cars were sold or registered by various manufacturers in France last month. The figure represents a year-over-year increase of 51 per cent in sales of plug-in cars in the Western European country. In terms of market share, the given figure represents 26.8 per cent, which is also considerably up from 19.8 per cent in June last year.

Sales of overall new passenger cars in France increased by 11.5 per cent year-over-year to settle at 190,848 units last month, which took the year-to-date (YTD) total to 889,785 units (up 15 per cent from the corresponding period of last year).

The most impressive growth was recorded in the segment of all-electric cars (BEVs). Sales of all-electric cars grew 52 per cent year-over-year to settle at 33,280 units, which accounted for a 17.4 per cent share of the market. Last year, the market share of the all-electric cars sales was recorded at 12.8 per cent. It means that this segment enjoyed a strong 4.6 per cent growth in sales year-over-year. Sales of plug-in hybrid cars also grew.

To be more specific, France’s new plug-in vehicle sales in June 2023 included 33,280 units of passenger BEVs (up 52 per cent at 17.4 per cent market share) and 17,935 passenger PHEVs (up 50 per cent at 9.4 per cent market share). Thus, total passenger plug-in car sales grew to 26.8 per cent of total at 51,215 units (up 51 per cent at 26.8 per cent market share).

Sales of light commercial BEVs and PHEVs settled at 4,068 (up 276 per cent at 9.5 per cent market share) and 41 units (down 13 per cent), respectively. Total plug-in sales jumped 58 per cent to 55,324 units.

YTD plug-in electric vehicle sales jumped to more than 230,000 units. This figure includes slightly more than 215,000 passenger plug-in cars (up 38 per cent year-over-year at 24.3 per cent market share). More precisely, total YTD sales includes 137,919 units passenger BEVs (up 48 per cent), 77,990 units passenger PHEVs (up 24 per cent), 14,646 units of light commercial BEVs (up 133 per cent) and 188 units of light commercial PHEVs (down 46 per cent). Total plug-ins settled at 230,743 (up 42 per cent).
