German state premier severely injured in skiing accident

Vienna  - The premier of the eastern German state of Thuringia remained hospitalized Thursday night, but was out of imminent danger after a severe skiing accident earlier in the day in the Austrian state of Styria.

Dieter Althaus, 50, of the Christian Democrat party collided with a female skier on the slopes Thursday afternoon, according to local police.

The woman, a US citizen, died on the way to the hospital. Althaus was evacuated for medical treatment by helicopter to a hospital in the Austrian town of Schwarzach im Pongau where he was immediately treated for a serious head injury.

A spokesman for Althaus said Thursday that the premier is out of imminent danger. (dpa)
