India To Release MIP Images Soon

India To Release MIP Images SoonISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) has received the Moon Impact Probe (MIP) images of the moon by Chandrayaan. Scientists are observing the various aspects of the lunar surface and these images would soon be released to the general public.

The Moon Impact Probe has started its operations after detaching from the orbiting Chandrayaan. It landed on the surface of the moon at 8:31 IST on November 14, 2008. ISRO had released two images while it was landing.

According to the sources from ISRO, the scientists are analyzing almost 3200 images including the images from the Terrain Mapping Camera (TMC) at ISRO's Ahmedabad-based Space Applications Center. Some pictures were taken very close to the lunar surface. These would prove very beneficial to find the prospectus of life on the lunar surface.

Deputy Director of the sensor development area at the Space Applications Centre, A.S. Kiran Kumar said, "While we have released some sample images already, the full set of 3,200 pictures will also be made public after some more time. Since the pictures are of very high resolution, the features are not listed on any current moon atlas. "

China released a three-dimensional map of the lunar surface with data from its Chang'e-1 mission while Japan is also releasing very clear pictures of the lunar surface. Comparing these images with Chandrayaan's, an ISRO official said, "The Chinese camera is three-dimensional but only has a resolution of 200 metres compared to our five-metre resolution. The Japanese one has 10-metre resolution, but they have only stereo doublet - we have a stereo triplet."
