Indian police arrest Jaipur blast suspect

Indian police arrest Jaipur blast suspectNew Delhi  - Police in New Delhi have arrested a man suspected of being involved in the Jaipur serial blasts that killed more than 60 people, news reports said Thursday.

The police picked up Mohammad Abdul Rehman, suspected of belonging to the Bangladesh-based Islamic militant group Harkat-ul Jehadi Islami (HuJI), near the New Delhi Railway Station on Wednesday night, PTI news agency reported.

Although a little-known terrorist outfit called the Indian Mujahideen claimed responsibility for the attacks in emails to media organizations, intelligence agencies suspect the HuJI masterminded the serial blasts in Jaipur on May 13.

About three kilogrammes of the explosive RDX, five detonators and a sophisticated timing device were recovered from a western Delhi area after the interrogation Rehman, an unnamed Delhi police officer was quoted as saying.

"We are interrogating him to find out whether he was involved in the recent blasts," the officer said. He said Rehman was arrested after a tip-off by intelligence agencies.

Indian security agencies blame the HuJI for carrying out serial bombings in northern Uttar Pradesh in November 2007 which left 13 dead and wounded more than 40. The same terrorist group was suspected in a bomb attack at a Sufi Muslim shrine in Ajmer last year which claimed two lives. (dpa)
