Indian police file charges against 21 men for serial blasts

Maharashtra MapNew Delhi - The Mumbai police filed charges Tuesday against 21 members of the Indian Mujahideen (IM) group, accusing them of plotting and carrying out blasts over the past three years including the 2008 bombings in Bangalore, Ahmedabad and New Delhi, news reports said.

The men, including three computer professionals, have been charged under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act, IANS news agency reported.

The charge sheet, which runs more than 1,800 pages, alleges the 21 men were responsible for a series of crimes ranging from murder to waging war against the country. The charges were filed before a special court judge in Mumbai.

Minutes before the July 26 serial bombing in Ahmedabad and the September 13 bombings in New Delhi, the Indian Mujahideen had sent emails to media organizations warning of the attacks.

At least 56 people were killed in the Ahmedabad attack and 24 in Delhi.

The Mumbai Police nabbed five alleged Indian Mujahideen members in September, while 16 others were arrested in different parts of the country, including northern Uttar Pradesh, western Maharashtra and southern Karnataka and Kerala states in September and October. (dpa)
