Inter Milan out to overcome defence worries against Udinese

Milan - Their standing in the Serie A may not show it clearly, but champions Inter Milan are facing some unexpected problems in a defence package that was crucial for them in the successes of the past seasons.

The five goals conceded in the last two games, a 3-2 win over tail-enders Reggina and a 3-3 draw at Cypriot side Anorthosis, sent bad signals that president Massimo Moratti did not fail to point out.

"There must be something to adjust," he said. "It's partly a psychological problem and a matter of mistakes. They make them, and if you make mistakes, you concede goals."

Further mistakes could be paid dearly Sunday as the champions host at the Giuseppe Meazza an Udinese side boasting the league's best attack on 19 goals and lying joint-second with them on 21 points.

Closely watching the big match at the Giuseppe Meazza will be front-runners AC Milan, holding a one-point lead before the 11th round of games they close late Sunday away to promoted Lecce.

The game in Milan will be of interest also for Napoli, on 20 points ahead of a home game to struggling Sampdoria.

Young, fast and solid, the Naples side are the major surprise of the current season and could sit next to Udinese and Inter had they not damaged themselves with an own goal as they lost 1-0 at Milan last weekend.

Struggling Torino have eight points, half as many as mid-table Palermo, when they open the weekend Saturday afternoon welcoming the Sicily side.

Later on the same day, Roma check if they are truly out of their crisis with a visit to lowly Bologna after delighting their home crowd in mid-week with a great 3-1 beating of giants Chelsea in the Champions League.

"After this game we understood that we are a great and very strong team," said Mirko Vucinic, who scored a brace against the English side. "And we must show it also in the home league."

Ten games into the season, Roma have all but lost hope to vie for the title after two good seasons they closed behind Inter.

Their embarrassing seven-point tally puts them a single point above second-last Bologna, who this week changed coach calling in Sinisa Mihajlovic, a former Lazio and Inter defender at his first coaching job.

Juventus have the wind at their backs after a memorable 2-0 win at Real Madrid qualified them in advance for the knock-out stage of the Champions League.

They will try to move closer to the top by increasing their 18 points Sunday through a visit to Chievo, who lie next to Bologna and also switched coach this week.

Fiorentina, on 17 points, take on Atalanta and look to resume winning after losing their regional derby to Siena, who face a tough hurdle at 19-point Lazio.

In other Sunday action, Catania welcome Cagliari and Genoa entertain bottom side Reggina. (dpa)
