CrimeOfficials have said, a Maplewood, Minn., police officer, working on what should have been his off-day, was fatally shot checking out a possible carjacking.

It was reported that Sgt. Joseph Bergeron, 49, showed up for work at the St. Paul suburb's police station on Saturday to help out the short-staffed squad by working as a patrol supervisor.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune has reported that as he stepped out of his patrol car at 6:50 a. m. to check on a reported carjacking east of St. Paul's Lake Phalen, he was fatally shot by a man who allegedly matched a description of one of the carjackers.

The newspaper also said that a jogger who heard the gunshot saw the alleged suspects fleeing on foot and found Bergeron gravely wounded and using his patrol car radio for help.

About 11 a. m. a St. Paul police officer guarding the perimeter of another crime scene spotted one of the alleged carjackers walking out of nearby woods carrying a toolbox and other items. The officer engaged the man who then attacked the officer, who shot and killed the suspect.

The Star Tribune further said that the dead man was identified as 21-year-old Jason John Jones of St. Paul.
