At least 15 killed in highway accident in western India

IndiaNew Delhi  -  At least 15 people were killed when the jeep they were travelling in collided with a tanker in India's western city of Mumbai on Sunday, police said.

Three other passengers were injured in the accident that occurred on a highway in the city's Navi Mumbai area.

"The victims included 10 women, three children and two men. They were part of a group from the western Satara district who were coming to attend a wedding function in Mumbai," inspector R Patil said.

The injured were admitted to a local hospital, he added.

Road accidents are common in India and often involve inadequately trained drivers. Poor condition of vehicles and roads are also factors in many accidents.

More than 95,000 people are killed in crashes on Indian roads every year. Surveys suggest such deaths could multiply by 150 per cent by 2010 as vehicular traffic is increasing by about 20 per cent per year. (dpa)
