Most drinkers are unaware that alcohol disrupts sound sleep

Sound sleepSound sleep at night is necessary for the proper functioning of body. Intake of alcohol over the recommended limit hampers the valuable sleep and disrupts vital brain functions. Recent survey has revealed that majority of the drinkers are unaware of the effect of alcohol on sound sleep at night.

Findings of the recent survey conducted by the YouGov for the government's Know Your Limits campaign was based on the data collected from nearly 2,000 drinkers.

Survey revealed that nearly 58% of the drinkers surveyed are not aware of the fact that drinking above the recommended daily limits can cause sleep problems. Out of these 63% men and 53% women were unaware of the link.

Around 45% of the people surveyed admitted experiencing tiredness the day after drinking over the recommended daily limits but most people don't realize that alcohol could be the reason behind this.

Jessica Alexander, spokesperson for the Sleep Council said: "Although many people may feel alcohol helps them get off to sleep, it is also a major culprit for disrupting your night as it can interfere with the body's chemical processes needed for sound sleep. Waking up deprived of the vital sleep your body needs will leave you feeling drained and, if experienced night after night, can seriously affect your health and wellbeing."
