Musharraf wants national reconciliation

Islamabad, Oct 7 : President General Pervez Musharraf has called for national reconciliation in Pakistan after winning re-election, saying he was open to talks with all parties, even with those which boycotted Saturday's poll.

Soon after his victory, Musharraf issued a statement in which he thanked those who had voted for him. He appealed to people to end protests against his rule.

The BBC quoted him as saying that he had appealed to lawyers leading opposition to his candidacy to end their protests, and asked ordinary Pakistanis not to join strikes and protests.

"And, I again give my offer of reconciliation to all political parties," Musharraf said.

However, he did not rule out the possibility of emergency action if the Supreme Court rules against his candidature, as he continues to serve as army chief.

"Let them come to their decision, then we will decide," he said.

The apex court is scheduled to take a decision in this regard by 17 October.

Unofficial results of the presidential elections in Pakistan declared Musharraf the winner with a heavy majority.

According to unofficial results, Musharraf bagged 252 votes in the parliament, while Justice Wajih got just two votes, while three votes have been rejected.

In the voting process in the Punjab Assembly, Musharraf bagged 253 votes and Justice Wajih three, while in the Sindh Assembly, Musharraf bagged 102 votes out of total 104 cast votes and Justice Wajih got two votes.

In NWFP Assembly, Musharraf has bagged 31 votes, Justice Wajih got one vote, while two votes were rejected.

Musharraf bagged all 33 votes cast in Balochistan Assembly.

Benazir Bhutto's Pakistan Peoples Party parliamentarians boycotted the polls.

Under Friday's Supreme Court ruling, the results of the election would not be formally announced till the court’s verdict on constitutional petitions under hearing in the apex court. (ANI)
