Need To Improve Healthcare Infrastructure: IRDA

Need To Improve Healthcare Infrastructure: IRDAHealthcare insurance business could not be expanded as per expectations due to the inefficient healthcare infrastructure of the country. Public private partnership should be encouraged to cover the large Indian population under health insurance cover. There is an immense need to improve the government health institutions and traditional health schemes. These views were expressed by the chairman of the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA), Mr. J. Hari Narayan, who was speaking at the Health Insurance Summit 2008 organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

Mr. Narayan said, "Even if there is a marginal increase in the type of healthcare insurance services, we will find our physical capacities insufficient. Therefore, there is an urgent need to build alternative systems to take care of the deficit in healthcare infrastructure."

He stressed the need of maximum use of technology to expand insurance business to reach the common masses by developing simple and attractive policies in the vernacular languages.

CII National Healthcare Council & Chairman Apollo Hospitals Group, Prathap C. Reddy appreciated the model followed by Andhra Pradesh Government for expanding healthcare facilities to common masses and said that other states should also develop policies which includes consumers, providers and insurers at ground level. He asked to spread consumer awareness by making insurance healthcare a way of life.
