Euro champions Spain superior to uninspired England
Seville - Spain turned on their Euro 2008 style on Wednesday to beat dull England 2-0, in a high-profile friendly played in Seville.
Strikers David Villa and Fernando Llorente netted for Spain, who could have won by a greater margin.
This is the third time that Spain - who are now unbeaten for 29 games - have beaten England within the space of five years.
Fortunately, there was no repetition of the racist abuse of England's black players that marred England's last visit to Spain, in 2004.
Neither were there serious public order problems in Seville, despite the presence of around 4,000 England fans, many of them without a match ticket.
The convincing win keeps intact Vicente del Bosque's hundred per cent record on the Spain bench, since taking over from Luis Aragones last July.
Llorente said that he was "very happy" to score his first goal for Spain, adding that "I hope there are many more to come."
Defender Gerard Pique, making his international debut in the Spanish defence, said that "it is quite easy to come into this team, because of the way that they play."
England made an energetic start, but lacked ideas in attack. The slick Spanish midfield unit slowly but surely took control.
The first goal came in the 36th minute. Xabi Alonso found Villa with a classy through-ball, and the Euro 2008 top scorer skipped round Rio Ferdinand and Phil Jagielka before scoring with a low drive.
Marcos Senna, Alonso and Sergio Ramos all went close for Spain as the hosts got the bit firmly between their teeth.
The second half was a duller affair, with England still lacking penetration in attack.
In the 82nd minute the promising Llorente scored his first international goal by heading in a tempting free-kick from playmaker Xavi, taking advantage of ball-watching by England substitute Matthew Upson.
England coach Fabio Capello kept former England captain David Beckham on the bench for the start of the game, but brought the midfielder, who is currently on loan to AC Milan from his American club LA Galaxy on for the start of the second half.
Beckham, 33, who is keen for a permanent move to Serie A, thereby equalled Bobby Moore's record of 108 England matches for an outfield player. Only goalkeeper Peter Shilton with 125 games has been capped more often.
Beckham though, could also not inspire his team-mates to a better performance and Spain deservedly ran out 2-0 winners. (dpa)
