Jordan's king meets Peres, urges cessation of settlement activity

Amman, JordanAmman- Jordan's King Abdullah II met Israeli President Shimon Peres Wednesday and warned that continued settlement in East Jerusalem and the West Bank "threatened" peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.

"The monarch stressed during the meeting that the Israeli settlement policy threatens the peace process," according to a royal court statement.

"Israel should take all measures necessary for facilitating the life of Palestinians and alleviating the difficult economic and living conditions they currently face," the statement quoted the king as saying.

They also discussed the ongoing negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians and means of "pushing them forward".

The meeting was held in the ancient city of Petra, where Peres attended the opening session of the Fourth Conference of Nobel Prize Laureates currently hosted there by Jordan. (dpa)
