Pakistan, India trade fire in Kashmir region, girl injured

Islamabad, PakistanIslamabad- Pakistan on Monday claimed Indian border security forces opened fire on the de facto border, called the Line of Control (LoC) in the disputed Himalayan territory of Kashmir on Monday, injuring one young girl.

"India troops resorted to unprovoked firing on the LoC this morning in Rawalakot sector, injuring a girl Ruina (in Pakistan-administered Kashmir)," Pakistan Army spokesman Major Murad Khan told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

He said Pakistani troops responded briefly with small arms' fire. Islamabad later registered a strong protest with India.

The nuclear-armed South Asian neighbours have fought two wars in the Kashmir region, since they gained their independence from Britain in 1947. They went to the brink of a third conflict in 2002.

A cease-fire agreement for Kashmir was signed in 2003, a year before the countries started a peace process to resolve their differences.

But this year the armed forces of both countries have engaged in some exchange of fire. (dpa)
