Palestinians to tell Clinton Israel must honour previous agreements

Palestinians to tell Clinton Israel must honour previous agreementsRamallah  - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas was to tell visiting Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton that talks with Israel will not be restarted unless Israel's expected right-wing government accepts previous agreements and a two-state solution, an aide to the president said Wednesday.

Clinton arrived in Ramallah Wednesday morning for her first talks as Washington's top diplomat with the Palestinian leadership.

Nabil Abu Rudeineh told Voice of Palestine Radio that Abbas will also demand that Israel halt settlement activity, and reopen the crossing points into the Gaza Strip, to allow reconstruction of the salient following a devastating Israel offensive earlier this year.

In addition to Abbas, Clinton will also hold talks with Acting Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, and is slated to meet with Palestinian businessmen in East Jerusalem on her return from Ramallah.

The secretary of state held talks in Israel Tuesday with the outgoing Israeli leadership of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Defence Minister Ehud Barak.

She also met with Prime Minister-desiognate Benjamin Netanyahu, who is attempting to form a coalition with right-wing and nationalist parties.

Netanyahu has spoken in favour of Palestinian self-government, but has stopped short of endorsing a Palestinian state alongside Israel. (dpa)
