Law minister will not resign: PM

Manmohan-SinghNew Delhi, April 27 : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Saturday ruled out the resignation of Law Minister Ashwani Kumar.

The prime minister's assertion comes a day after the opposition demanded the law minister's removal for vetting a draft of the CBI probe report on the coal scam, meant only for the Supreme Court.

"There is no question of the law minister resigning... the matter is sub judice," the prime minister told reporters Saturday on the sidelines of a defence investiture ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan here.

Kamal-NathNew Delhi, April 26 : Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath Friday said there was no question of the resignation of Law Minister Ashwani Kumar.

The assertion came as opposition BJP and Left parties demanded the resignation of the law minister for vetting a CBI report on the coal block allocation scam, prior to its submission to the Supreme Court.

"The CBI director has clearly said that the draft report was seen by the law minister and not the final report. There is no question of him (Ashwani Kumar) resigning," Nath told reporters here.

"We would hope that the DMK would reconsider its decision. The DMK has been a valuable ally. I hope things will be resolved," Kumar told reporters outside the parliament.

The DMK Tuesday quit the UPA and its government, voicing dismay over India's stand over Sri Lanka at the UNHRC.

Need to broad-base appointments of judges: Law minister

Ashwani-KumarMumbai, March 9 : Union Law and Justice Minister Ashwani Kumar said here Saturday that there was a need to broadbase the process of appointing judges to the Supreme Court and the high courts.

Speaking to mediapersons, Kumar said that a political consensus has been built on the same and admitted that "the present process had not proved to be adequate and there was a need to relook and revisit the issue".

Currently, judges are appointed by a five-judge Supreme Court collegium.

Cabinet approves Lokpal bill amendments

Ashwani-KumarNew Delhi, Jan 31 : The cabinet Thursday approved amendments to the Lokpal bill suggested by a select committee of the Rajya Sabha.

"I am happy to say THE cabinet has given the seal of approval. The select committee recommendations have broadly been accepted," Law Minister Ashwani Kumar said.

The bill, passed by the Lok Sabha, is pending in the Rajya Sabha. It was referred to a select committee of the upper house, which suggested several amendments to the bill.

The bill will now be put to vote in the Rajya Sabha. (IANS)
