Maoists undermining democracy in Nepal alleges Girija Prasad Koirala

Nepal former Prime Minister and president of Nepali Congress (NC) Girija Prasad KoiralaKathmandu, Sept 27: Nepal former Prime Minister and president of Nepali Congress (NC) Girija Prasad Koirala has warned Maoists against undermining democracy.

Nepalnews quoted him as saying that Prime Minister Prachanda and some Maoist leaders have started saying that parliamentary democracy had failed.

He said: “I want them to look at the example of United Kingdom – the mother of parliamentary democracy”.

Addressing a function organised by party's student wing, Nepal Student Union (NSU) here, Koirala criticised the statement by Prime Minister Prachanda that Nepal now would have neither a parliamentary system nor a communist rule.

Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) Rukmangad Katuwal, Inspector General of Police Om Bikram Rana and Inspector General of Armed Police Force Basudev Oli discussed the security situation with Koirala at his residence in Baluwatar.

Koirala today met Constituent Assembly (CA) members of Nepali Congress
to discuss the issue of formation of a new government.

During
the meeting, Koirala, instructed the Constituent Assembly members to
strongly uphold the party''s position regarding the transfer of
government leadership to the Maoists.

According to Nepali
Congress leaders, Koirala indirectly hinted at clinging on to the
demand for defense ministry for his party to join the new government.

According to Kantipur, in a meeting with Unified Marxist-Leninist (UML) General Secretary Jhala Nath Khanal at PM’s official residence at Baluwatar today, the Prime Minister reportedly underscored that the Maoists should create an environment of trust by implementing the agreements made in the past.

Koirala is transiting through New Delhi to Nepal after attending the 15th SAARC Summit in Colombo.

The leaders discussed bilateral ties and issues of mutual interest during their meeting.

Leader of opposition L. K. Advani also met Koirala separately.
