No FDIs In Retail Sector: Nath

New Delhi: The government clarified that it was open to reviewing the Special Economic Zone Act once the number of SEZs in the country crossed the figure of 100. The Union Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath said that the government will not hesitate to take action if it gets realistic information about irregularities within SEZs Act.

He said, “If anyone brings to our notice any irregularities, including those concerning real estate activities, within the SEZs, and if they are factual and true, we will take corrective steps.”

Nath To Hold Bilateral Talks With Swiss Economic Minister

New Delhi: In order to promote economic links between the two countries, the Union Commerce and industry minister Kamal Nath will hold bilateral talks with Swiss Economics Minister Doris Leuthard.

According to the Economics ministry the Swiss Ministry trip will mark the 60th anniversary of Switzerland and India's Treaty of Friendship and Establishment. Leuthard will be accompanied by a group of 25 people from the business field. The delegation will also visit Bangalore, Mysore and Mumbai. Leuthard will also hold talks with finance minister P. Chidambaram and science and technology minister Kapil Sibal on free trade and access for Swiss firms to the Indian market.

Government studies organized retailing on unorganized retail trade

Kamal NathNew Delhi, Apr 30 : Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath told the Rajya Sabha today that the Government has instituted a study through Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations to assess the impact of organized retailing on unorganized retail trade.

Nath said, “The government has also commissioned a study to the Nation Council of Applied Economic Research on growth linkages of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in India.”

The study will also focus on the impact of FDI on the rural economy.

Food, fuels and fertilizers are three challenges facing the world: Nath

Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal NathNew Delhi, Apr. 29: Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath today identified three challenges facing the world.

The challenges were food, fuels and fertilizers.

Speaking at the session on "Globalisation the New Mantra, But How do we Remain Competitive?" here today, Nath said the ongoing global food crisis is because of the growing use of agricultural land for bio fuels production. He further added that his Ministry is forced to ban rice exports to safeguard Indian interests.

Kamal Nath to meet Swiss Economic Minister, hold bilateral talks

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Kamal NathNew Delhi, Apr 29: Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Kamal Nath and Switzerland’s Economic Minister Doris Leuthard will hold a bilateral meeting here today.

The visit is being held to improve access to the Indian market for Swiss firms and for promoting her country as a business destination.

During her visit, she will also meet Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram and Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal.

Leuthard will be accompanied by a business delegation of 25 people. They will also visit Bangalore, Mysore and Mumbai.

Kamal Nath unveils Mahatma Gandhi’s sculpture in Bangkok

Thailand Foreign Affairs Minister Noppadon Pattama, and Executive Secretary of United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific (UNESCAP) Noeleen Heyzer and heads of ministerial delegations participating in the 64th session of UNESCAP were present during the occasion, a government release said. Indo-Egypt bilateral trade talks today

Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal NathNew Delhi, Apr 15: Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath and his Egyptian counterpart Rachid Mohamed Rachid will discuss possibilities of cooperation in textiles, home furnishing, automotive, shipping, leather and mining sector here today.

Rachid is accompanied by a 35-member business delegation.

With both countries registering healthy increases in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in recent years, their intention is to enter into a more intense economic relationship.

Govt, FICCI Join Hands To Set Up ‘Invest India’ Venture

In order to provide a new edge to the investment in the country, the Kamal NathIndian government has decided to establish a joint venture (JV) company ‘Invest India’ in association with industry body FICCI.

At the National Seminar on Foreign Trade Policy, Kamal Nath, Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath said, “The Invest India company, a joint venture between the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion and FICCI, would be funded by the Government and managed by the chamber.”

The company, funded through government, would be established in the next two months.

Kamal Nath targets five percent world trade share by 2020

Government envisages more steps to check inflation

New Delhi, Apr 11: Kamal NathCommerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath said today that the central government would take more steps to control inflation.

Releasing India's foreign trade policy document here, Nath said that the supply side inflationary trend in the economy should be addressed by ensuring the regular supply of food items.

He also suggested to State Governments to take measures to counter the problem of hoarding and speculation in trade.

Center to cut duties on food items: Kamal Nath

Kamal NathNew Delhi, Mar 31 : Union Commerce Minister Kamal Nath on Monday said that the Central Government has decided to slash duties on the entire range of food items to contain the rising prices.

Inflation rate zoomed to a 13-month high of 6.68 per cent during week ended March 15.

"With a very steep increase in international prices, the supply side is being affected and our imported duties have to be calibrated in response to international prices so with international prices being steep we are looking towards cutting our duties on the food front, on edible oils, on a whole range of products," said Kamal Nath.

Kamal Nath calls for increasing Indo-Romanian bilateral trade

Kamal NathNew Delhi, Mar 4 : Union Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath on Tuesday called for increasing the bilateral trade between India and Romania, considering the untapped opportunities for exploiting the potential for growth.

Indo-Romanian trade, which stagnated over the last decade, is now on the upswing, said Nath after his meeting with Romanian Economy and Finance Minister Varujan Vosganian.

Bilateral trade has grown from 68 million dollars in 2000 to 430 million dollars during 2006-07, said Nath adding that India has a vibrant SME sector and engagement by SMEs on both sides would strengthen the foundations of the trade relationship.

India to reduce items in negative list to boost SAARC trade

New Delhi, Mar 3: South Asian Association of Regional CooperationUnion Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath today said that India has decided to reduce the items mentioned in the negative list with regard to its trade with the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) of the (SAARC).

Addressing at the third meeting of South Asian Free Trade Association (SAFTA) Nath said, the items in the negative list would be brought down to 500 from 744.

Commerce and Industry MInister Kamal Nath New Delhi, Feb. 12 : Commerce and Industry MInister Kamal Nath today welcomed the Revised Draft Modalities texts on Agriculture and NAMA, which had been brought out in Geneva on February 8.

Commending the Chairs of the two negotiating groups for their efforts in seeking convergence and for putting together the complicated texts, Nath, however, said that a final view on the two texts would be possible only after holding consultations with other Ministries, domestic stakeholders, and India’s partner countries in Geneva.

Kamal Nath calls for improving Indo-Kyrgystan bilateral trade

New Delhi, Feb 6:Indo-Kyrgystan bilateral trade The Union Commerce and Industry Minister, Kamal Nath, has called for improving the bilateral trade between India and Kyrgystan.

He said it while observing that the bilateral trade during 2006-07 is of the order of 38 million dollars, including exports worth 37 million dollars and imports of 0.77 million dollars.

The relations between the two countries are traditionally close and have over close political rapport and meaningful economic co-operation reinforced the years, said Nath during his meeting with Kyrgystan Foreign Affairs Minister Ednan Karabaev.

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal NathBeijing, Jan. 14: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath today said that he would be meeting World Trade Organisation (WTO) chief Pascal Lamy on Wednesday morning on the sidelines of Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh's ongoing three-day visit to China.

Addressing the Indian media here after the India-China Business Summit, Nath said Lamy's presence in China should be seen as important for both India and China, as both Asian economic giants were keen to redress existing economic and commercial imbalances vis-a-vis developing countries under the WTO regime.
