Rahul-GandhiRamanathapuram (Tamil Nadu), April 21 : Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi Monday said it is only the Congress party that had worked for empowerment of the people in the country.

"India has developed both economically and socially only under the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.  It is because of the UPA government's initiatives that there has been transparency in every government work," Gandhi said at a rally here.

He said it is the Congress that passed The Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013 in parliament.

"In Gujarat, Adani gets land in just Re. 1, the same amount of money which you spend to buy a toffee. It's a toffee model," he said, addressing an election rally in this Maharashtra town.

In Gujarat, only one industrialist was benefiting at the cost of farmers and labourers, who were dying of hunger, he claimed.

Talking to reporters after filing his nomination papers here in Uttar Pradesh, Gandhi said he had made no attempt to talk about Modi's personal life but was merely "stating a factual position" as per the Gujarat chief minister's affidavit filed in Vadodara constituency.

The Gandhi scion was addressing a rally here. He said the Bharatiya Janata Party misled the nation in 2004 and again in 2009 by suggesting India was shinning, but its balloon burst.

Highlighting the achievements of the UPA government, Gandhi said: "We have taken 15 crore people out of poverty. This is not a small work."

He said the Congress party is for the weak, poor and the farmers.

People are voting in Chhattisgarh (1), Haryana (10), Jammu and Kashmir (1), Jharkhand (5), Kerala (20), Madhya Pradesh (9), Maharashtra (10), Odisha (10), Uttar Pradesh (10), Bihar (6), Delhi (7), Andaman and Nicobar islands (1), Chandigarh (1) and Lakshadweep (1).

Gandhi is scheduled to address a rally in Jhunjhunu Lok Sabha constituency in Rajasthan in the morning followed by another rally in the state's Udaipur constituency in the afternoon.

He will then head to Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh for a 'Jansampark Abhiyan' (mission to reach out to people) in the evening, said a statement from Gandhi's office.

According to a release from his office, Gandhi will hold a public meeting at Silchar Lok Sabha constituency in Cachar district of Assam. This meeting, scheduled 10.30 a. m., will take place at Rajiv Gandhi Sports Complex at Udharband.

Gandhi will attend another public meeting at 2 p. m. in Chhattisgarh's Kanker Lok Sabha constituency which falls in the state's Balod district.

The application to obtain a 'temporary residential certificate' was denied by the sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) based on a report submitted by the tehsildar, a revenue official.
