Only poor can understand poverty in true sense: Rahul Gandhi

Rahul GandhiBangalore, Mar 29 : On the final day of his five-day tour of Karnataka, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi said that he was sensitive towards poverty, saying that to fully understand it one has to be poor.

"I'm sensitive to poverty. I try and understand poverty. But to fully understand poverty, you have to face poverty," Rahul Gandhi told a press conference here.

It may be recalled that during his entire Orissa and Karnataka, Rahul Gandhi has visited tribals, dalits and people from the poor section of the society to understand the problem of poverty.

Gandhi spent time understanding the problems and struggles faced by tribals. In a rare gesture, he planted a medicinal plant on the campus and informally mingled with both children and adults.

He also visited a super speciality 100-bed hospital built in the area for the tribals.

Aiming to understand and discover India, Rahul visited Muttugadagaddepodu, a tiny Soliga (primitive tribe) hamlet atop the B. R. Hills on the slopes of the Nilgiri biosphere in the Western Ghats of Karnataka. Gandhi, who arrived by chopper from Bangalore, was accompanied by senior Congress leaders.

Kaur told Rahul that Sarabjit is being denied justice and that his case was that of mistaken identity.

After the meeting, Kaur told reporters that Rahul has assured her of his full support and had promised personal meetings with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi.

He met the survivors of the family and promised support to the children for educational facilities.

"He (Rahul) assured us that the education of the children would be taken care of, declaring that once the children reached the age of 18 years, future course of action would be decided,” said Pawan Kumari, sister of the deceased.
