Priyanka Gandhi visits Bangladesh

Priyanka Gandhi Dhaka - Priyanka Gandhi, daughter of Indian National Congress president Sonia Gandhi, arrived in Dhaka Tuesday on a two-day personal visit to observe Bangladesh's rural development, officials said.

Senior officials from the Indian High Commission in Dhaka received Priyanka at Zia International Airport.

During her stay in Dhaka she will visit micro-credit and non-formal education programmes run by the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC), one of the largest non-governmental organisations in the world.

On her arrival, the 36-year-old Priyanka visited a non-formal primary school in Savar near Dhaka, said the media manager of the BRAC, Zia Hashan, who was accompanying her.

She was scheduled to meet Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasian Wazed later Tuesday.

Priyanka, born to the late Indian prime minister Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia, and granddaughter of former Indian premier Indira Gandhi, is being provided with the highest security by the Bangladesh Special Security Force.

Priyanka's brother, Rahul Gandhi, the Congress general-secretary, has visited Dhaka to get first-hand information on Bangladesh's rural development programmes to replicate them for India through the Rajuv Gandhi Foundation, working for the rural poor in Bangladesh.
