For PM's visit, Chandigarh hospitals' gates to be closed

Manmohan SinghChandigarh, Dec 29 : The main gates of Chandigarh's two main hospitals will be shut when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh reaches here Monday to attend an event in neighbouring Punjab's Mohali district.

The Chandigarh Police have ordered the closure of the main gates of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) and the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH) at Sector 16 during the visit.

Punjab to host agriculture summit in February

Parkash-Singh-BadalChandigarh, Dec 26 : After the successful conduct of its investors summit for industry, the Punjab government Thursday announced that it will now hold an agriculture summit in the state in February next year.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal announced that the agriculture summit will be a five-day affair starting Feb 16 at the Chappar Chiri village in Mohali, 20 km from here.

This is the first time that a mega agricultural event, the "Progressive Punjab Agriculture Summit-2014", is being held in the state.

Surgical technique named after Chandigarh doctor

Dr-Santosh-KumarChandigarh, Dec 2 : Having devised and successfully carried out a new technique to remove a rare tumour of the kidney through a minimal invasive method, a surgeon from Chandigarh's Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) has had the technique being named after him.

The "Santosh PGI Technique', named after PGIMER's assistant professor of urology Santosh Kumar, has been acknowledged by the Asian Journal of Endoscopic Surgery, the official journal of the Japan Society for Endoscopic Surgery and the Asia Endosurgery Task Force.

Punjab, Haryana procure nearly 179 lakh tonnes paddyChandigarh, Nov 26 : Food grain states Punjab and Haryana have procured nearly 179 lakh tonnes of paddy this season, food and supplies officials in both states said Tuesday.

Out of this, nearly 127 lakh tonnes have been procured in Punjab while over 52 lakh tonnes procured in Haryana.

Over 95 percent of the paddy arrival has been procured by government agencies in Punjab, while the rest has been bought by private rice millers and traders.

Sangrur, Ludhiana and Patiala districts were leading in paddy procurement, the officials said.

Omkar Rai, director general of Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), on Wednesday said that software exports from the Chandigarh region grew 20 per cent over the past year, as the region's governments provided various incentives to support the sector.

Punjab procures over 105 lakh tonne paddyChandigarh, Nov 5 : Over 105 lakh tonnes of paddy has been procured in Punjab this season, food and supplies officials in the state said Tuesday.

Despite some paddy produce arriving in discoloured form and higher moisture content due to erratic weather in recent months, leading to central agencies not to buy this stock, the procurement of paddy has crossed the 100 lakh tonnes mark this year.

Over 99.75 lakh tonnes, or 94.6 percent of the paddy arrival, have been procured by government agencies while the rest has been bought by private rice sellers and traders.

Pall, 46, studied in Chandigarh's St John's school before completing his engineering degree in computer science from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani, and is working as corporate vice president at Microsoft Corporation. He is heading the information platform and experience team in Microsoft's new applications and services division.

Country's richest woman is new Haryana minister

Savitri-JindalChandigarh, Oct 29 : The country's richest woman, Savitri Jindal, was Tuesday inducted as a minister in the Haryana cabinet by Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

This is the second time that she has become a minister in the Hooda government. She was earlier a minister of state in the 2005-09 Hooda government.

Jindal is a legislator from the ruling Congress from Hisar assembly constituency and is the mother of industrial tycoon and high-profile parliament member Naveen Jindal (Lok Sabha member from Kurukshetra).

In Punjab, government agencies and private millers procured nearly 78 lakh tonnes paddy, officials said.

Over 93.2 percent of the paddy arrival has been procured by government agencies while the rest has been procured by private rice shellers and traders.

In Punjab, government agencies and private millers procured nearly 57 lakh tonnes paddy, officials said.

Over 92.7 percent of the paddy arrival has been procured by government agencies while the rest has been procured by private rice shellers and traders.

Ferozepur, Patiala and Moga districts were leading in paddy procurement, the officials said.

Haryana, Punjab paddy arrival crosses 30 lakh tonnes

paddy-marketChandigarh, Oct 14 : Over 30 lakh tonnes of paddy has arrived this season in food grain states Haryana and Punjab, food and supplies officials of both states said Thursday.

In Haryana, nearly 16 lakh tonnes of paddy has so far arrived in the various grain markets, officials said. The arrival is higher than the nearly 14.5 lakh tonnes paddy that arrived in the the same period last year.

Karnal, Kurukshetra and Kaithal districts were leading in paddy arrivals.

In Punjab, government agencies and private millers procured nearly 14 lakh tonnes paddy, the officials said.

DCHL ex-director Sukumar Reddy gets bail in cheque bounce caseMenakuru Sukumar Reddy, one of the former directors of the beleaguered Deccan Chronicle Holdings Ltd (DCHL), managed to get a bail from a Chandigarh court on Thursday in a cheque bounce case worth crores of rupees.

There were non-bailable warrant against Reddy but the court granted the bail on merit because it was not a criminal complaint. He was granted bail against bonds of Rs 20 lakh (Rs 5 lakh each in four different cases registered against him).

No relief from high court for rapper Honey Singh

Honey-SinghChandigarh, July 4 : The Punjab and Haryana High Court Thursday refused to interfere in the case against popular singer-rapper Honey Singh registered by Punjab Police. It also dismissed a PIL filed before it by a Punjab-based NGO regarding vulgarity in his songs.

The rapper had sought the intervention of the high court regarding the FIR (first information report) registered against him by Punjab Police in the state's Nawanshahr town, 80 km from here, May 16.

However, the court did not give him any relief in the case registered against him and said that the singer was free to proceed with any remedy, if available.

Registration of marriages made compulsory in Punjab

Registration-MarriageChandigarh, June 15 : The Punjab government Saturday announced that registration of marriages in the state would be mandatory in future.

The Punjab cabinet, which met here Saturday, gave the go-ahead to the Punjab Compulsory Registration Marriage Rules, 2013, for registering marriages of the residents of the state.

"All marriages were required to be now compulsorily registered under these rules within 90 days of the solemnization of the marriages," a state government spokesman said here.

The cabinet also approved a policy to regularize unauthorised colonies in the state.

Pakistan to declare Panja Sahib a holy city

The president of Pakistan-India Friendship Association and legal counsel to Pakistan's interior ministry, Arif Chaudhry, discosed this when he called on Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal here, a Punjab government spokesman said Friday.

Chaudhary said that the Pakistan-India Friendship Association will organise a function at Panja Sahib to mark the occasion soon.

Sikh group objects to Shinde's statement

Sushilkumar-ShindeChandigarh, June 7 : Sikh group Dal Khalsa Friday slammed union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde for saying that Sikh militants based in Pakistan were under pressure from Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) to revive terrorism in Punjab.

Taking exception to Shinde's statement, Dal Khalsa president H. S. Dhami said it was just "customary rhetoric" aimed at portraying Sikhs in bad light.

He said the home minister's views were "baseless, unfounded and ridiculous" and meant to mislead the public.

Haryana gets only 58.82 lakh tonnes of wheat

wheatChandigarh, June 3 : Contrary to expectations of a bumper wheat arrival of nearly 90 lakh tonnes, Haryana has seen wheat arrival of only 58.82 lakh tonnes this year, food and supplies officials said Monday.

"Over 58.82 lakh tonnes of wheat has arrived so far in Haryana mandis during the current procurement season. Out of it, over 58.73 lakh tonnes of wheat has been procured by government agencies and 9,232 tonnes has been purchased by private millers and traders," a spokesman of the food and supplies department said.

This is much lower than the arrival of 83.25 lakh tonnes of wheat in the season last year.

Punjab and Haryana High Court chief takes oath

Haryana Governor Jagannath Pahadia administered the oath of office to Chief Justice Kaul at a ceremony at the Haryana Raj Bhavan here.

Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, ministers and senior officers of Haryana and Punjab and judges of the high court were present at the ceremony.
