L&T Signs JV With HowdenLarsen & Toubro (L&T) and Howden have signed a JV pact to design, engineer, assemble and supply axial fans and air pre heaters to Indian thermal power facilities ranging between 100 MW to 1200 MW.

These products form essential components of energy efficient thermal power facilities.

The JV will make investment of around Rs 1 billion for establishing the industrial facility and related infrastructure.

The manufacturing plant will be established in Hazira, Gujarat and its operations are likely to start by the coming year.

Reliance Industries strikes oil at Cambay

RILReliance Industries Ltd. has found out another oil source in the Cambay basin, Gujarat. This has been the fourth oil discovery in the region.

According to the company officials, this has been a significant discovery. The company is also expecting to open more number of oil pools within this block. These blocks will have better hydrocarbon potential within them.

The company has also informed that the flow at this onland block has been awarded under the Nelp-V round of bidding. It is producing 300 barrels of oil per day.

HC allows Nirma plant to be set up in Gujarat

NirmaOn Monday, the Gujarat High Court gave a clean chit to Nirma for setting up its plant at Mahua near Bhavnagar. The total cost of the plant is Rs. 1,400 crore and will be for manufacturing cement.

Nirma is into the business of detergent making and the plant was under threat after farmers opposed its setting up. They said that the plant was harming the environment of the region. And since it has a water body, the plant will impact the source of water and affect the environment adversely.

The Gujarat government’s unwillingness to spend its share in a Central scholarship scheme is denying more than 50,000 minority students access to better education. The BJP-ruled state is the only one to have refused to implement the pre-matriculation scholarship scheme since it was launched in 2008. The Narendra Modi government says it can’t bear the 25 per cent funding required under the scheme.

But officials at the state secretariat say there’s more to it than meets the eye. “The scholarship amount under the scheme is very high compared to what we provide to the community students along with other backward classes
(OBCs) in the state,” an official of the department of social justice and empowerment, who wished to remain anonymous, told HT.

SC orders a CBI probe in Sohrabuddin encounter case

As a setback to the Gujarat government lead by Narendra Modi, the Supreme Court ordered a CBI probe into the fake encounter of Sohrabuddin Sheikh taking the case away from the state.

The Supreme Court expressed its dissatisfaction over the conduct of the case by the state government as the latter failed to conduct impartial investigations and filed conflicting reports.

State has expressed that a CBI probe cannot be ordered as the charge sheet has already been filed. However, a Bench consisting of Justices Tarun Chatterjee and Aftab Alam held that the investigation by the Gujarat police could not be said to be satisfactorily held.

Ahmedabad, Jan 9 : A case was filed against the owner and other employees of a hotel here where terror suspect Tahawwur Hussain Rana and a woman posing as his wife had stayed for two days in November 2008, prior to the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.

The First Information Report (FIR), reportedly lodged at the behest of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), against hotel owner Patanjali Keshvani, Prashant Malhotra - the manager when Rana stayed - and present manager Subhash Sharma is for violating rules under the Registration of Foreigners Act and beginning the hotel's operations even before it obtained a license.

'Paa' is tax free in Gujarat after Bachchan visit

PaaGandhinagar, Jan 8 : The Gujarat government has granted tax exemption to the Amitabh Bachchan starrer "Paa", that deals with a rare medical disorder, progeria or accelerated ageing.

A notification granting the tax exemption was issued by the Gujarat government Friday. The tax exemption in the entire state would come into effect from Saturday.

The plea for the tax exemption was made by Bachchan himself during his visit to the state capital Wednesday, when he met Chief Minister Narendra Modi and arranged a special showing of the film for Modi.
