Obama's Jakarta ties raise expectations in South-East Asia

Barack ObamaJakarta  - US president-elect Barack Obama's childhood years in Indonesia may provide him with a unique personal link to South-East Asia, but it remains to be seen how deep the old school ties go, analysts warn.

Obama, the first African-American to be elected president, can also claim to be the first US president to have spent almost four years of his childhood in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, two years attending a public Muslim school and two more in a Catholic school.

Dewi Asmara Oetojo, who was a schoolmate of Obama when he went to a primary school in Jakarta in the 1960s expressed the feelings of the Illinois senator's old school friends: "It's just amazing. We're so proud of him," she said.

US, Australian embassies in Jakarta receive bomb threats

Bali BombersJakarta  - Indonesian military authorities stepped up security of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono following threats to assassinate him and other senior officials if the three Bali bombers are executed, a military official said Tuesday.

"We will prepare the security as well as possible, from planning to the implementation," Armed Forces Commander General Djoko Santoso was quoted as saying by the state-run Antara news agency.

Three Bali bombersWashington, Nov. 4 : The U. S. and Australian embassies in Indonesia received bomb threats today amid a security crackdown ahead of the imminent execution of three Islamists convicted over the Bali bombings.

The Indonesian news site detik. com reported 12 officers had swept the front of the Australian embassy, but did not find anything.

It said Australian officials had told police they would conduct their own internal sweep.

The Australian embassy in Jakarta would not comment, referring questions to DFAT in Canberra.

Threat to US, Australia embassies in Jakarta if Bali bombers were executed

Jakarta, Nov 4 : Unidentified terrorists have reportedly threatened to blow up the US and Australian embassies in Indonesia if the three Bali bombers were executed.

The three are expected to be executed in a day or two by placing them before a firing squad. Two days ago their relatives were asked to meet them in jail.

Following the threat from unidentified location, the Indonesian Police were investigating to trace those behind it.

“A bomb threat against the U. S. and Australian embassies was sent via a mobile phone text message,” The News quoted National Police spokesman Abubakar Nataprawira as saying.

He added that an investigation was underway into the threat.

The bomb threats were sent anonymously through a telephone text message to the police, said Heri Wibowo, spokesman for the central Jakarta city police.

Police have taken the bomb threats seriously although a similar threat against a shopping mall in Jakarta on Monday proved to be a hoax.
