Ex-central bank governor in Indonesia gets five years for graft

Jakarta - Indonesia's anti-corruption court on Wednesday sentenced a former central bank governor to five years in prison for misappropriating millions of dollars in bank funds.

The court also ordered Burhanuddin Abdullah to pay a 250-million-rupiah (25,000-dollar) fine.

Abdullah was convicted of using a foundation linked to Bank Indonesia to pay bribes of about 10 million dollars to members of parliament deliberating amendments of the central bank law in 2004 and to cover the cost of legal assistance for former senior bank officials.

Abdullah, who was replaced in May after his five-year term as governor expired, was arrested in April by the country's Corruption Eradication Commission.

Indonesia unveils measures to prop up rupiah

Jakarta - Indonesia has ordered state companies to place their US dollars at home and plans to scrap a levy on overseas palm-oil sales to bolster the rupiah after the currency plunged to its lowest level since 2001, media reports said Wednesday.

The government and central bank also plan to buy bonds from the market to restore investor confidence, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said Tuesday night after a cabinet meeting.

The rupiah fell as much as 8.7 per cent Tuesday to 11,900 against the dollar before recovering to 10,900 on suspected intervention by the central bank as Indonesian stocks declined to their lowest values since December 2005.

Indonesian stocks fall more than 4 per cent

Jakarta - Indonesian stocks dropped by more than 4 per cent Tuesday, counter to the rebound experienced by most Asian markets, while the country's currency fell sharply to reach its lowest since July 2001.

The Jakarta Composite Index fell to a new low, closing at 1,111.39, down 55.02 points, or 4.72 per cent.

Indonesian President Susilo Bamband Yudhoyono said that he might outline steps to help the embattled rupiah later Tuesday.

"We will do everything to save our economy," Yudhoyono told reporters, without saying what steps he had in mind. He added that Bank Indonesia and economic advisors were in a meeting to discuss measures to help the local currency.

Malaysian marine police detain 43 Indonesians for illegal entry

Kuala Lumpur  - Malaysian marine police have detained 43 Indonesians for attempting to enter the country illegally by boat in the eastern Sabah state on Borneo island, an official news report said Tuesday.

Police detained the immigrants early Tuesday during river patrols, said district marine police chief Husaini Zainal Abidin.

"A check on a boat found that the passengers comprising 14 men, 13 women and eight children had no travel documents," Husaini was quoted as saying by the official Bernama news agency.

He said eight others who did have travel documents were also detained for further questioning.

The 21-year-old boat captain and his two assistants, all believed to be Malaysian, were also detained.
