UN hostage deadline extended in Pakistan

Islamabad - Pakistani insurgents holding a US citizen working for the United Nations said Monday they would extend for "few days" the deadline given for the hostage's execution.

A previously unknown group, the Baloch United Liberation Front, on Friday released a video of John Solecki, who leads the UN refugee agency's operations in the south-western Balochistan province, and issued a 72-hour ultimatum for the acceptance of their demands.

Solecki was kidnapped by gunmen in the provincial capital Quetta on February 2 while he was on his way to work in a car carrying the UN emblem and registration plates. His Pakistani driver was shot dead in the ambush.

The attack was believed to be carried out by US unmanned aircraft that targeted a suspected militant hideout in Sadda area of Kurram tribal district.

Two missiles destroyed a house where Taliban militants were holding a meeting, according to a local intelligence official.

According to The Dawn, the FIA managed to restore its website within 15 minutes.

Seven people were also injured in the attack in South Waziristan, a sanctuary of Taliban and al-Qaeda militants launching cross-border attacks on international troops in Afghanistan.
