Floriculture replacing opium cultivation in Jharkhand

JharkhandHazaribagh (Jharkhand), Dec. 16 : Farmers in Jharkhand, who used to nurture plants of poppy seeds for opium, are now shifting to floriculture and enjoying higher profits.

The anti-narcotic agencies found out that hundreds of villages such as Irkhori, Simaria, Barkagaon, Gidhaur and Pathalgarh areas in Hazaribagh and Chatra Districts were used for opium cultivation.

But today the lands that used to be sort of poppy seed plantations, present a colourful look with plants of blooming flowers.

The latest step has been taken after mid-day meals and distribution of free uniforms, could not produce expected results of bringing back children to schools.

The programme especially focusses on the poor tribal children for whom celebration of birthdays is like a dream, many of them are not even aware about their birth date.

Maoists kill five policemen in Jharkhand ambush

Rahe (Jharkhand), Dec 6: Maoist rebels have killed five policemen in an ambush in Jharkhand’s Rahe village.

The policemen were returning to their station on Friday after checking a bank said to be the target of the Maoist rebels at Rahe village near the state capital Ranchi.

The rebels ambushed the police jeep in a forest, a police spokesperson said.

“Five of our policemen were out on patrolling and en route they conducted a check on a bank. While returning, they were attacked by the Maoists from the bushes. The Maoists fired at the personnel, all of whom died on the spot,” said S. M. Pradhan, spokesperson, Jharkhand police.

The Maoists also took away the guns of the policemen.

Five policemen killed in Maoist attackFive policemen of a patrolling party were killed on Friday in Jharkhand when Maoists waiting in dense forest ambushed them.

The incident happened in Ranchi district's Silli area, about 50 km from the state capital.

The dead policemen were part of the Special Task Force (STF) of Jharkhand police.

"The STF personnel were returning after inspecting a bank near the Rahe outpost in Silli, when Maoists, waiting in the dense forest, ambushed them," said Inspector General of Police S N Pradhan.
