400 sacks of ammonium nitrate seized in Jharkhand

Dhanbad (Jharkhand), Jan 16 : In a major haul, police seized 400 sacks of ammonium nitrate from Dhanbad in Jharkhand.

The recovery was made from a quarter of Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) during a raid by the members of the Special Task Force.

The seized sacks were from a consignment looted from a police station in December last year.

One accused, Jitender Singh, from whose quarters the recovery was made, was also arrested by the officials and taken into custody.

Shibu Soren resignsIn the aftermath of his defeat in the assembly by-poll, Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren today resigned after presiding over his constituency for a little over four months and projected a JMM MLA as his successor. "Maine apne aatma ki awaz ko suna aur apne pad se istifa de rahaa hoon (I am quitting on the call of my conscience)," he said.

"We have decided Champai Soren as our (chief ministerial) candidate. Yesterday I informed the central UPA leaders... I also called a meeting inviting state UPA allies but none came... The JMM will not change its decision on its candidate," he said.

Shibu Soren likely to resign todayRanchi, Jan. 12 : Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren, who had lost the assembly by-elections, is likely to resign today, paving the way for Champai Soren, another stalwart of the regional Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).

Soren yesterday told reporters: "The JMM had met thrice and chose Champai Soren as its representative. We have sent this information to other members of our coalition in New Delhi and waiting for response. I am ready to resign."

On Champai selection, RJD chief Lalu Yadav said the UPA will take a final decision.

Shibu Soren loses in Tamar Assembly polls

Shibu SorenRanchi, Jan 8 : Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren on Thursday lost his Tamar Assembly seat to Jharkhand Party candidate Gopal Krishna Patar by a margin of 9000 votes.

Elections for the seat, which fell vacant after the gunning down of JD (U) legislature party leader Ramesh Singh Munda on July 9, 2008, were held on January 3 this year and counting was taken up today.

Meanwhile, the BJP has demanded resignation of Shibu Soren from the Chief Ministership of Jharkhand and president''s rule in the state.

Rampaging elephants attack Jharkhand village

Kundhit (Jharkhand), Jan 2: Wild elephants have attacked the remote village of Kundhit in Jharkhand's Jaamtara District, terrifying its residents.

The animals after losing their track ventured into the human settlement and damaged standing paddy crops.

"The elephants are here since yesterday and have destroyed a lot of our crops. Most of our paddy crop was destroyed by them. The forest officials say that they will provide us with torches to keep the elephants away," said Ganesh Chandra Mandal, a villager.

Forest officials have arrived in the village to pacify its panic stricken residents.

The officials are trying to push the elephants back to their habitat.

''Z class security'' for Dhoni

Mahendra Singh DhoniRanchi, Dec 30 : Security of Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was beefed up after his family expressed concern about the security provided by the State Government.

Sudhir Mahto, the Deputy Chief Minister of Jharkhand said that ''Z class security'' was provided to Dhoni after there were reports in some sections of media about the security concerns to the cricketer and his family.

"We have acted after we saw some reports in the media about the security concerns for the cricketer," he added.
