HSBC helped customers across globe evade millions of pounds in tax: Report

London, Feb 09 - A report has said that Britain's biggest bank, HSBC, helped its customers evade millions of pounds in tax.

The report was based on details of thousands of accounts from HSBC's private bank in Switzerland, which were leaked by a whistleblower in 2007, reported the BBC.

They showed that bankers helped its customers dodge tax and offered them deals to help them stay ahead of the law.

While admitting that some bank account holders took advantage of bank secrecy to hold undeclared accounts, HSBC said that it has now "fundamentally changed."

The documents, leaked by a computer expert working for HSBC in Geneva in 2007, contained details of about 100,000 clients worldwide. (ANI)

'The Theory of Everything' actress said on 'The Jonathan Ross Show' that she was told to get a call at 5:30am for nomination confirmation, but she didn't expect it anyway and decided to sleep so that she doesn't feel bad, the Daily Express reported.

Jones continued that when she woke up she received a call telling her that she has been nominated for the Academy Awards.

The 31-year-old actress later added that she had no words, and she was just feeling so excited and also surprised with the news.

Jones has also received rave reviews for playing Jane Hawking, the former wife of Professor Stephen Hawking, in 'The Theory of Everything'. (ANI)

Hollande says new peace plan chalked by France, Germany `last chance` to end Ukraine conflict

London, Feb 08 - French President Francois Hollande has reportedly termed a peace plan drawn up by France and Germany as "one of the last chances" to end the conflict in east Ukraine.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that it was unclear if the plan would succeed but added that it was "definitely worth trying," reported the BBC.

Hollande said that the plan included a demilitarised zone of 50-70km around the current front line.

The two leaders are due to discuss the plan with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leader Petro Poroshenko via telephone on Sunday.

Although few details are known about the peace plan yet it is believed to be an attempt to revive a failed truce signed in Minsk, Belarus, in September last year.

The magazine shared the pic on Instagram where the 'Hunger Games' star can be seen lying nude on her front with a Boa constrictor snake crawling over her body, the Independent reported.

The magazine's fashion and style director Jessica Diehl said that the 24-year-old actress has the perfect combination of strength, sexuality, humour and, above all, tomboy to pull this off.

According to the publication, Lawrence only started to become uncomfortable when the snake took a particular interest in her neck and the shoot ended shortly afterwards, and the Boa slipped back into its protective box.

London, Feb 06 - Former world number one Tiger Woods has backed out of the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines due to back pain .

The 14-time major champion called it quit in the first round after he got to the green on his 12th hole of the day.

Woods said that his glutes kept shutting off and that caused him pain in his back, adding that he tried warming up his glutes, but it wasn't working for him, the BBC reported.

Woods was taking part in his second tournament of the season after returning from surgery on a pinched nerve, which led him to miss last year's Masters and US Open. (ANI)

London, Feb 05 - The chairman of the U. S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has reportedly proposed a slew of "strong" measures to ensure that the principles of net neutrality are upheld.

Describing his vision as the "strongest open internet protections ever proposed by the FCC," Tom Wheeler said in an article that he intended to impose new restrictions on how fixed line and mobile broadband providers handle data, reported the BBC.

Wheeler explained that he wanted to reclassify internet service providers (ISPs) to make them like any other public utility, in order to ensure that they can be regulated by the watchdog.

He proposed a series of enforceable, bright-line rules that will prohibit paid prioritisation, and the blocking and throttling of lawful content and services.

The company also outdid revenue expectations as it posted a 31 percent rise and netted 14.1 billion dollars as opposed to forecasts for 13.7 billion dollars in sales, reported the BBC.

The University of Edinburgh study found that some people are more at risk of conditions such as Alzheimer's, due to genetic makeup, the Daily Express reported.

Using DNA data from 54,000 people, aged over 45, all over the world, researchers pinpointed genetic signals that make them more likely to develop dementia and they hope further studies can be carried out on the "biological mechanisms" which make these genes work. London, Feb 04 : Only eight out of 74 biggest Chinese cities have met the government's basic air quality standards in 2014, the environment ministry said.

The most polluted cities of China were in north-eastern Hebei, the province surrounding the capital city of Beijing. While the northern industrial city of Baoding had the dirtiest air, the southern city of Haikou, in Hainan province, was found to have the cleanest air, reported the BBC.

Beijing and Shanghai failed the assessment that was based on readings of pollutants such as PM2.5, PM10, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and ozone.

The statement was published on environment ministry's website and noted that the 2014 outcome was an improvement over the previous year when just three cities met the air quality standards.

Di Maria's wife Jorgelina is currently staying in a top Manchester hotel and has reportedly refused to return to the family mansion after three men raided their home on Saturday.

The couple, who moved to the home in Cheshire following the star's 60 million-pound move from Real Madrid, were said to have been watching TV with their one-year-old daughter, Mia, when the raid occurred, The Daily Star reported.
