Two killed, nine injured in Madurai railway station blast

Madurai, Oct. 7 : Two people were killed and nine were injured in a blast at Cholavandan Railway Stationabout 30 kilometers from Madurai on Tuesday evening, .

The blast occurred a little after 6 p. m. on platform number two when a parcel containing fireworks exploded soon after it was offloaded from the Mayiladuthurai-Tirunelveli passenger train.

The roof of the railway station collapsed due to the impact of the explosion.

Police said that while one of the victims used was a vendor at the platform selling betel-nuts and fruits, the identity of the other could not be ascertained.

CPI (M) politburo member Brinda Karat arrested in Tamil NaduMadurai (TN), Sep 12 : CPI (M) politburo member Brinda Karat was arrested on Saturday at a village in Tamil Nadu.

According to sources Karat was arrested with some All India Democratic Women''s Association (AIDWA) activists when they were on their way to a village in Madurai district.

Sources added that she was arrested because she was trying to conduct a meeting in the village, which is caste sensitive village.

The village lies in the Usilampatti subdivision in Madurai district having a history of caste clashes. (ANI)

To make a record, docs do 14 surgeries in three-and-a-half hours With a desire to make a record, a team of doctors conducted 14 breast cancer surgeries in span of in three-and-a-half hours at Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai.  

The team of doctor comprising of Rajaji hospital’s head of oncology, Dr. BKCR Mohan Prasad, chief anaesthetist Dr R Chandrasekhar and surgeon Dr Gopinath planned these 14 operations in order to get entry in the Guinness Book of World Records.

5 More Swine Flu Cases In India; Toll Rises To 73In a shocking development, five more cases of swine flu have been reported on Wednesday. With this, the total number of swine flu cases has risen to 73 in the country.

Out of the five new cases, two new cases were reported from the Capital, while one each from Chandigarh, Madurai and Hyderabad.

According to an official statement, “At least 532 persons have been tested so far. Of them 73 are positive for influenza A(H1N1). Of these, six are indigenous cases, who got the infection from the positive cases who travelled from abroad.”

Tobacco, liquor habits detail must for death certificate

Anbumani RamadossMadurai, Oct 13 : The Union Health Ministry after enforcing ban on smoking in public places, has directed health officials in states to seek details about the tobacco and drinking habits of deceased persons before issuing death certificates.

Application forms for the death certificates had been modified and specific queries in this regard had been included, official sources here said.

However, the instructions did not specify the reason for eliciting these details, they said.

Congress Wins Madurai West Seat By 31,115 votes

CongressMadurai: Congress applicant K.S.K Rajendran won the Madurai West assemblage electorate by a margin of 31,115 votes over his closest AIADMK opponent Sellur K Raju.

The Congressional applicant, part of the DMK-led Democratic Progressive Alliance, was chairing since the vote counting process started at 8 am today.

The by-poll on June 26 was required because of the death of revolutionary AIADMK member S.V. Shanmugham.
