Nepal leaders blame both India and Nepal governments for Sunsari flood disaster

NepalKathmandu, Aug 22: Political leaders and experts in Nepal have blamed the Nepal Government’s negligence and the Indian Government’s bullying tactics for the breach of the Saptakoshi embankment.

Water resources and disaster management experts stressed on the need to revise the treaty between both nations regarding the Koshi Barrage, Kantipuronline reported.

“The people of Sunsari district have been victimised by the Indian Government’s bully nature,” Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist leader Dinanath Sharma was quoted, as saying.

The three major ruling parties, CPN (Maoists), CPN (UML) and the Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (MJF) held a meeting last evening at the UML’s parliamentary party office at Singha Durbar. But, the meeting ended up inconclusive regarding the ministerial portfolio-sharing issue that has been protracting the expansion of the new coalition government in the Himalayan Kingdom.

Breach of Sunsari embankment displaces over 35,000

Kathmandu, Aug 20 : The Indian Embassy in Nepal has claimed that the Nepal administration''''s failure to cooperate with the Indian technical team working at Saptakoshi embankment caused the inundation in Sunsari, which has caused the displacement of over 35 thousand people.

"The Indian technical team has been in Nepal for last several days to reinforce and strengthen the spurs and the embankment on the Saptkoshi River in consultation with the local administration," said a statement issued on Tuesday evening by the Indian Embassy.

Nepal seeks India’s help to repair river barrage

Koshi River, NepalKathmandu, Aug. 20: Nepal’s Ministry for Water Resource has approached the Indian Government for help in reconstructing the damaged parts of Koshi River embankment.

According to a report in The Himalayan Times, a letter to this effect has been sent to New Delhi.

“We have sent a letter to the Indian embassy through the foreign ministry seeking India's help," Xinhua and The Himalayan Times quoted Anup Upadhyaya, a spokesperson of the ministry as saying on Wednesday.

Nepal ParchandaKathmandu, Aug 18 : Nepal’s Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal alias ‘Prachanda’ was sworn-in at a ceremony at Shital Niwas, the office of the President here today.

President Dr Ram Baran Yadav administered him oath of office and secrecy. He took oath in the name of the people of Nepal.

Prachanda attended his swearing-in ceremony wearing a western suit and Bhadgaule topi instead of the traditional ''national dress'' Daura Suruwal and ''Nepali topi''.

The decision on his outfit was taken at a central committee meeting of Maoist party held at its parliamentary office in Singha Durbar.
