Reservation orders for Tesla Cybertruck surpass 1.9 million

Electric vehicle (EV) enthusiasts’ craze for the long-awaited Tesla Cybertruck continues to soar after Tesla Motors announced the estimated delivery date for the vehicle. The interest in Cybertruck is clear from the number of orders that have surpassed the mark of 1.9 million. Production of the Tesla Cybertruck, a battery electric light-duty pickup truck, started early this month at the American firm’s Texas Gigafactory. The first unit rolled off the production line roughly four years after the official unveiling of the vehicle in 2019. However, even Tesla CEO Elon Musk admitted that it would not be easy for the company to meet strong demand for Cybertruck. Speaking at the company’s most recent earnings call, Musk stated that demand for the pickup truck is "so off the hook that you can’t even see the hook.”

Back in May 2021, the number of pre-orders for the Cybertruck were at around 1 million. It means that reservations for the EV have almost doubled within the past couple of years. The pickup will debut with a 350-mile range, while its top-of-the-line quad-motor variant will reportedly deliver a range of 620 miles on a single charge.

The top executive also used the earnings call to discuss some innovative features of the Tesla Cybertruck, describing the battery electric light-duty pickup as unlike anything else running on the road.

Speaking on the topic, Musk said, "I do want to emphasize that the Cybertruck has a lot of new technology in it, like a lot. It doesn’t look like — it doesn’t look like any other vehicle because it is not like any other vehicle.”

Tesla has plans to produce up to 375,000 units of the Tesla Cybertruck per year at the plant’s peak capacity. Thus, it will take several years for the company to supply the ordered pickup trucks to customers. It is also possible that a large number of those who have already placed orders may eventually ditch their plans to purchase the Cybertruck. After all, the deposit for reserving a Tesla Cybertruck was merely $100.

Anyhow, Tesla will have to increase its production capacity for the pickup truck. In addition to the Texas Gigafactory, the pickup truck will likely also be produced at Gigafactory Mexico when the proposed production plant is up & running in a few years’ time.

It will be quite interesting to see if the Tesla Cybertruck will also be offered outside of North America. Some experts are of the view the large size and hefty weight of the truck could make it a serious challenge for the company to sell it overseas.
